New Delhi: Yamaha has trademarked the YZF-R2 name in India, likely indicating that the manufacturer is working on the latest 200cc supersport. This newest bike will be a more powerful alternative to the Yamaha R15, and it will go up against the KTM RC200 and the Hero Karizma XMR. This upcoming motorcycle could be an enlarged version of the Yamaha R15’s 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. On the R15, it produces 18.1bhp and 14.2 Nm, and it will reckon it could produce around 24.6bhp and 19 Nm in its 200cc avatar.
Yamaha only has the R15 and the R3 in its supersport portfolio, which leaves a gap in its product lineup. With the upcoming latest R2, the brand will be able to fill this gap, and it will compete with rivals like the KTM and Hero better. This is one possibility, but there’s also the chance that Yamaha might decide to replace the R15 with the R2. However, the chances of this are rather slim, as the 155cc platform is already quite successful, and it makes no sense to replace it with a more expensive alternative.
So far, there is no information about the bike’s launch timeline, but they expect it to come to India by the festive season 2026 or early 2027. People hope the brand is able to get the pricing right, so somewhere in the Rs 2.10 to Rs 2.20 lakh ex-showroom.
