New Delhi: Following the announcement by Netflix on the purchase of Warner Bros Discovery, there were a lot of criticisms received across various sections of the globe. The concern raised by people is that the deal will monopolize the entertainment business. When a single company owns excessive shows, films, and characters, it could diminish the selection options of the audiences.
The situation is monitored by the governments of some countries. The regulators fear that Netflix might acquire excessive power. They worry that the company might raise the prices or limit the content access. In Europe, Asia and even the US, authorities have begun to pose questions and strategize their checks.
There is also a strong reaction of fans. The biggest concern is that Netflix will alter their favourite characters or discontinue shows under the merger process. Warner Bros has been a long-standing cinema company, and the audience is protective of such iconic brands as DC Comics, Harry Potter and HBO Originals.
Creators of content are ambivalent. Others are convinced that Netflix has the capacity to inject more finances and international distribution. Some are worried that there may not be more companies in the industry, which may result in less creative freedom. They believe that a monopoly can also introduce homogenous content everywhere.
The analysts also note that content diversity had been at times diminished due to previous mergers. When Netflix becomes too powerful, other streaming businesses will not be able to survive. This would narrow down the choices of viewers and minimize competition.
Netflix, nevertheless, asserts that the merger will be helpful to users as they will have more content under one roof. The company explains that it has no intention of raising prices at the moment and its creators will remain free in their creative ambitions.
