Residents of Khavda in Kutchh district feared the worst when a 3.3 magnitude earthquake jolted Khawda, near Kutch at about 1am on September 25. According to reports, the tremors lasted about 45 minutes, although there have been no reports of loss of life or property so far.
Kutch lies on one of the most seismically active areas in India, with a higher potential of frequent earthquakes. The epicenter of this quake is near the India Pakistan border, according to recent reports.
On the eve of Republic Day on January 26, 2001, locals in Bhuj woke up to one of the worst earthquakes in India, where more than 20,000 people died and more than 4,00,000 buildings were destroyed. The earthquake back then measured 7.6 on the Ritcher scale, and the locals have feared a similar situation ever since.
