New Delhi: Meta Connect 2025 lands September 17–18, and yes, the show is about smart glasses, AI, and the metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg wants applause. He might get it.
What Meta Connect 2025 will reveal, short version
Meta’s annual developer-and-hype festival is back with a new schedule and a packed agenda. Expect next-gen smart glasses that actually feature a display, new Meta AI playbooks, Horizon OS updates, and developer toolkits designed to enable apps to run seamlessly inside glasses and VR headsets. The main keynote is Sept. 17 at 5:00 PM PT; the developer day follows on Sept. 18 at 10:00 AM PT.
Hypernova: Meta’s first glasses with a display
The marquee product is codenamed Hypernova, reportedly the first consumer Meta glasses to include a display in the lens. Don’t expect full-on holo-magic. This is a single-eye display designed for notifications, photo previews, and short interactions—the device pairs with a wrist-worn controller for gesture input rather than bulky camera-tracking.
Early reports put a likely price around $800 and suggest Meta may sell high-end frames via its EssilorLuxottica ties (Prada whispers persist).
Meta is positioning Hypernova as a bridge device: more capable than the Ray-Ban Meta audio/camera line, but far short of the Orion prototype’s immersive AR. That’s deliberate; lower field-of-view, narrower feature set, less futuristic spectacle, more practical first step.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s supply-chain notes suggest Meta expects small volumes, a limited, premium roll-out rather than a mass-market blitz. In short, this is an experimental product, not a smartphone-level business.
Ray-Ban refresh and broader glasses lineup

Meta won’t abandon its Ray-Ban family. Leaks suggest that updated Ray-Ban Meta models (sunglass and clear-frame versions) will feature improved cameras, longer battery life, and new AI features. Those upgrades are the practical play: cheaper, familiar frames that pick up incremental sales while Hypernova tests the upper tier. Expect more third-party developer access, too; the company is opening the platform beyond the handful of apps that currently work on Ray-Bans. That could finally move these glasses from novelty to utility.
Meta AI: scale, characters, and a reality check
Meta AI claims a billion monthly users across Meta apps. That’s a lot of mouths to feed and a lot of data to monetise, and Mark Zuckerberg will almost certainly headline that metric at the keynote. Expect new AI features on glasses and in apps, including localised, “character-driven” bots targeted at non-English markets. Meta is already hiring contractors to build culturally tuned bots for places like India and Indonesia. But don’t confuse scale with maturity.
Meta’s bigger Llama/“Behemoth” ambitions have hit speed bumps. Engineers have delayed the flagship model’s rollout over quality and capability concerns. That means Meta’s AI grand vision is in flux; Connect is the moment to either prove progress or manage expectations.
The metaverse is quieter, but strategic.
The metaverse may not dominate headlines the way it did in 2021, but Meta’s VR and Horizon OS plans are still central. CTO Andrew Bosworth teased “metaverse software” updates ahead of Connect, and developer sessions indicate a push to let generative AI seed NPCs and make worlds feel less empty. We should also hear progress on third-party Horizon OS headsets.
ASUS, Lenovo, and others are on deck, and leaked specs suggest that the first third-party devices could include face and eye tracking. Those features matter because they unlock richer avatars and Codec hologram-style experiences. No new Quest hardware is guaranteed; this year’s focus looks to be software, partners and getting devs actually to build valuable content for glasses and headsets. That’s a long-game play.
Developer-first programming (and why it matters)
Meta schedules a developer keynote and a stack of sessions: new toolkits, Llama fine-tuning best practices, GenAI tools for world-building, and Horizon OS integration guides. If Meta wants apps on glasses and partner headsets, this is the infrastructure push to make it happen. Developer buy-in will decide whether Hypernova stays a curiosity or becomes a platform.
Why India should pay attention
India is huge for Meta, with billions of messages and millions of daily users across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Localised AI bots and language-first features will be trialled here early. If Meta pushes Hypernova and AI into India, even via cheaper Ray-Ban refreshes or character bots on WhatsApp, the impact is material. Expect language adaptations and region-specific testing to show up fast after any Connect announcements.
