OpenAI enters the browser wars with Aura say goodbye to Chrome?

New Delhi: OpenAI, the full mastermind behind the most powerful ChatGPT, they working on a web browser, which will directly compete with Google Chrome. They are developing an AI-powered web browser. In some sources, it has been revealed that this web browser will be named Aura, and it will be designed to be deeply integrated with AI into a web browser. Furthermore, it will enable users to interact with the AI-powered web browser. According to some sources, it is stated that it has already emerged from the ChatGPT web application, where users will spot mentions like those in Aura and Aura Sidebar. OpenAI has yet to confirm any news about the name of this web browser.

This browser will be strongly integrated with the AI-driven browser, aiming to provide strong competition to popular search engines like Google Chrome, Firefox, and others. In some sources, it has been revealed that Perplexity is also developing an AI web browser that directly competes with Google Chrome and much more.

This web browser, Aura, will be based on Chromium, an open-source platform that powers Chrome and Edge. This means it will be compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. This browser is not a clone of Google Chrome, but the AI features of this OpenAI web browser are very different, which include:

  • Summarising web content
  • Autofilling forms
  • Booking appointments
  • AI agents performing tasks directly inside the browser itself

Unlike other browser that displays search results and websites, Aura might offer a chat-like interface for browsing. Just imagine, users are asking the browser to book a train ticket or summarise a long article, all done by an AI agent without jumping between tabs. Now, if we discuss the market share of ChatGPT, it is around 500 million weekly users who have adopted the Aura. OpenAI could become a serious player in the browser wars. If we discuss the present scenario, Google Chrome holds more than 65% of the global browser market.

Just by offering the in-built AI tools, OpenAI could pose a challenge to Google’s dominance, especially in areas like data collection and ad targeting. Some of the experts believe that Aura could also limit Google’s ad-driven ecosystem by handling tasks without third-party tracking, a feature that might appeal to privacy-conscious users.

Aura is expected to be introduced soon in the coming weeks, because there is no confirmed news about the launch, this AI web browser will transform not only how people use the internet, but it will also how AI becomes more layered in digital experience, meaning after the launching, it might be the direct rival of the Google Chrome.
