New Delhi: Microsoft has again made headlines by cutting over 300 more jobs, just weeks after it already laid off around 6,000 employees in May 2025. These fresh job cuts are part of Microsoft’s plan to restructure its workforce and focus more on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This latest layoff news was confirmed through a notice in Washington state, USA. It adds to the big round of 6,000 layoffs that happened just last month. That round was Microsoft’s second-largest layoff in recent years, after the 10,000 job cuts in 2023.
Microsoft hasn’t clearly said which departments were hit this time, but based on past data, it looks like software engineers and project managers were the most affected.
In the May layoffs:
- Over 40% of the cut jobs in Washington were of software engineers.
- Around 30% were project management roles, as the company tries to remove extra layers of management.
What did Satya Nadella say?
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about these layoffs during an internal meeting. He said the layoffs were not because employees were doing badly. Instead, it was a move to “realign” the company for the future.
He explained, “This was not about people failing. It was about repositioning for what comes next.”
And what’s next? AI, AI, and more AI.
AI is changing everything
Microsoft is now focusing a lot on Artificial Intelligence. Nadella even said that AI is now writing 30% of the code in some Microsoft projects! That’s huge. Because of this, Microsoft is spending a massive $80 billion this year to build more data centers, which are super important for running AI systems.
The company believes AI can do many tasks that earlier needed humans — like writing code, handling emails, and even making business decisions. So now, they’re investing more in AI tools and cutting jobs that AI can do.
Microsoft isn’t the only one doing this. Other big tech companies like Amazon, Google, and Salesforce are also reducing management roles and hiring fewer people. They’re trying to create flatter teams and depend more on engineers and AI tools to get things done faster and cheaper.
As of June 2025, Microsoft has around 2.28 lakh full-time employees worldwide. About 55% of them are in the United States.
