New Delhi: RPG Group Chairman conformably Harsh Goenka has recently launched scathing attacks on the recent comment made by SN Subrahmanyan, Chairman of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) – regarding the implementation of 90 hours working week. They alleged that during a meeting, Subrahmanyan said that it should be considered to work on Sunday that means people might need to give up their weekend.
Rohit Goenka came to my mind and the man fond of funny memes thought in the same way and posted on his social media account, “Why not rename Sunday to ‘Sun-duty’ and make ‘day off’ a mythical concept! He reiterated that hard work is good, but making life a huge work platform does not produce success but more of a weariness. In his words, many employees cannot afford to achieve the optimal work-life balance, they need it desperately.
Statements by Subrahmanyan have churned up more discussions, which are quite similar to those made by Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy about working a 70-hour week for young professionals just to increases India’s competency overseas. However, these ideas have very strong critics, and people quite objectively noted risks associated with not caring about employees and the need to rest.
Goenka’s perspective brings out increasing issues on the towering pressure that most organizations employees go through today. He said that despite the fact that he himself becomes productive, he espouses working intelligently rather than fixed procedures that associate success with work. His opinions have appealed to everyone who believes that working improvements should be focused on the betterment of employee’s health.
Subrahmanyan’s proposal has been criticized on social media, where people refuse to surrender their weekends for work. Opponents of this point of view state that the existence of similar expectations stoke a toxic environment at work, thereby contributing to stress and exhaustion. The conversation has shifted the focus from how productivity can be restored and achieved to how the companies must reassess the value of worker’s mental health and their free time.
