New Delhi: Google has launched its AI-powered Gemini mobile app in India, more than four months after it first came out in the U.S. This app supports nine Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu—along with English. Users can interact with the AI in these languages by either typing or speaking, as announced on Tuesday.
The Gemini app in India is powered by Gemini 1.0 Pro by default, but users can opt for a premium version to access the Gemini Advanced experience. This advanced version, based on Gemini 1.5 Pro, features a 1 million token context window capable of handling extensive information processing, such as documents up to 1,500 pages and complex data analysis. The advanced version also supports the nine Indian languages available in the app.
In addition to its launch in India, Google has also released the Gemini app in Turkey, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Android users in these regions can download the app from the Play Store and set Gemini as the default AI assistant in the Google Assistant app. iPhone users in India will be able to access Gemini through the Google app in the coming weeks.
During its I/O developer conference in May, Google highlighted various integrations of the Gemini AI assistant with other apps like Gmail, Google Messages, and YouTube, as well as a deeper integration with the Android operating system. Some of these features will be available on supported devices in the upcoming months. Starting today, Gemini is being integrated into Google Messages in English for Indian users.
Initially launched in the U.S. in February, the Gemini app expanded to European countries like Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, and the U.K. in April. It also added support for languages such as Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese to reach a wider audience.
