New Delhi, October 29: The representative worker unions and the management of Bathinda unit at UltraTech Cement have settled an agreement worth Rs.3.36 crore for the benefit of 217 former workers of the company. The agreement was achieved through the machinery of the Chief Labor Commissioner (Central) of the Ministry of Labor & Employment, to settle longstanding industrial disputes regarding worker compensation, statutory benefits and operational service terms.
The dispute was resolved by the holding of structural conciliation proceedings with prominent trade unions such as the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the Assistant Labour Commissioner (Central), Jalandhar under the Office of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
The agreement includes new wage structures, arrears and finalised service continuity or severance benefits, in accordance with central labour legislation. Proper execution of the settlement assures continued plant operation and financial protection to the affected labor force.
This reconciliation comes on the heels of a government push to avoid industial action and ensure unity within industry. The labour ministry has been working to achieve a mutually agreeable result to all concerned without sparking a confrontation, and in the interests of the workers and fair labour practices.
Other conciliation drives were carried out in other Ultratech facilities throughout the country, setting a tone for the proper treatment of contract employees in the country, revised wage rates in a clear manner, and mutually beneficial employer-employee relations in key industrial centres.
