Mumbai, October 17: India’s technology benchmark, the Nifty IT index has witnessed an unprecedented 12.5% surge across four trading sessions, reporting its strongest weekly performance in nearly two decades. This rally added nearly Rs.3 lakh crore in market cap to the country’s top technology companies, a sharp turnaround as market participants return to established software service companies following better-than-expected September quarter (Q2 FY27) earnings results.
This rally has come as a ray of hope for the markets, which have been battered by the flight of FIIs and the increasing pressure of inflation on economic activity.
For the IT sector, Indian IT companies strong operational footprint, where global enterprises continue to rely on them to integrate, scale and secure their digital infrastructure.Along with that, the IT sector offers predictable cash flows and high dividend yields, as against the hype of growth associated with AI companies, that is highly dependent on hardware that is increasingly facing supply chain issues of its own.
According to a report by Bain, the global AI economy would need about $6 trillion by 2031 to sustain its annual infrastructure investments, which have reached almost $412 billion in 2025. To finance the increased demand for AI, Google and others have had to take desperate measures, raising debt for the first time and even reporting negative cash flow as they work to meet demand.
For conservative investors, the Indian IT industry continues to offer strong growth prospects, and strong financial results from TCS, Infosys, and HCL Tech support that view. Though this cannot explicitly be a signal for Acche Din for these companies, it could be a signal for stability, and the recovery of the markets, but it remains too early to say for now.
