Modi, Trump hold phone call, review India-US ties across trade, defence and energy

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump by phone on Wednesday, with the two leaders going over the state of cooperation between India and the United States in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies.

Modi posted a video of the ‘productive’ meeting on X. He pointed out that the leaders have agreed to keep close contact to advance the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They also agreed to keep in contact, according to the PM’s Office.

The two also held discussions on regional and international issues. The discussion included continuing efforts towards advancing global peace and security, Modi said. The sides have not officially provided details of any conflicts or regions that were addressed.

The call coincides with ongoing talks between USA and New Delhi for a trade deal. Previously, both leaders had made a positive step towards an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement and requested their officials to prepare a balanced and mutually beneficial and commercially viable agreement in the shortest possible time. They had also discussed the progress under the India-USA COMPACT which is applicable to defence, strategic technologies, energy and trade.

Wednesday’s discussion comes on the heels of some signals from the U.S. side about the future of this relationship. Earlier, IANS had reported that senior US administration officials had outlined a blueprint for a broadened engagement and that Washington is pushing for Vice President Mike Pence to visit India early next year. India was one of Washington’s closest strategic partners, officials said. US Ambassador Sergio Gor has termed the personal connectivity between Modi and Trump as one of the two anchor factors of the relationship.

The countries over the past few years have expanded their cooperation beyond trade to defence, energy supply and emerging technologies. Calls of this nature have the capacity to help sustain that momentum at a leader level, especially as a trade agreement is yet to be concluded.

It wasn’t clear when the two leaders will next talk or even meet, but both sides indicated that the line of communication would remain open.
